Today the province of Ontario released the salary disclosure list for 2012.  This list is part of the Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act of 1996, which makes it necessary for organizations who receive public funding to disclose the names, positions and salaries of employees who are paid more than $100,000 during a calendar year.

This list has been nicknamed the “Sunshine List” and is a way for residents to see where their tax dollars are going.

This list is released each year and applies to such things as Universities, Hospitals, School Boards and Government employees.  The act was created in order to maintain an open system of government where everyone is held accountable.

Anyone who makes more than $100,000 in salary before taxes not including taxable benefits must be included in the disclosure.  An amendment was made last year and, “Thedefinition of salary now also includes per diems and/or retainers paid to employees, in addition to amounts reported as employment income on the Canada Revenue Agency T4 slip.”

Some of the highlights of the $100,000 list for the Niagara Region include:

Barbara Eade – Student Achievement Leader of Alternate Programs - $127,448.05

Wesley Hahn - Superintendent of Schools - $139,053.54

Cameron Hathaway – Superintendent of Planning - $165,190.91

Warren Hoshizaki – Director of Education - $242,481.58

Helen McGregor – Superintendent of Schools - $160,213.88

In total, 213 people make over $100,000 per year, including a plethora of elementary and secondary principals and vice principals.  There are also several teachers on the list.
