On Friday, June 14th, the city of St. Catharines welcomed the arrival of Big Lots, a retail store on Bunting Road that employs over fifty people. On hand at the celebration to give his congratulations on behalf of the mayor and the city was Councillor Bill Phillips.
Dianna, the district manager for the store, spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony with great pride about the store’s arrival. “There are over 40,000 Big Lots employees across North America,” she said, adding, “We are very proud to be here today for the grand opening of the second ever Big Lots store in Canada.”
In addition to the majority of the store’s staff being present, there were also several corporate representatives and many members of the community at the event. Big Lots provided customers with a piece of cake and a travel mug with the store’s logo on it. In addition, the first several customers received a five dollar Big Lots gift card.
In July of 2011, Big Lots acquired seventy-nine stores across Canada, spanning from British Columbia to Nova Scotia. The majority of these stores were previously under the Liquidation World umbrella and were slowly turned over during the last two years.
Big Lots features merchandise from over 3,000 manufacturers, passing on deals due to purchasing overstock, gaining inventory from bankruptcies, etc…Big Lots boasts, “From everyday consumables and housewares to toys and seasonal goods, Big Lots offers amazing values that other stores just can't match. As the nation's largest broadline closeout retailer, we have the buying power to find and negotiate the best deals in the business.”
The arrival of the store is a welcome addition to St. Catharines and a boost to the economy with the jobs that it has created. Big Lots stores are very popular in the United States and it looks as though they are well on the way to the same notoriety in Canada.
